With
a road streak like this, who needs home ice advantage? In a game
remarkably bereft of the typical drama one expects when visiting
Amarillo, the RoadRunners took a tie game into overtime and beat the
buzzer to take the first game against the Bulls 2-1.
A
scoreless first period bled deep into the second until Ryan Cole put
the Bulls ahead with a netter past Spencer Viele. The RoadRunner goalie
would go on to save 45 out of 46 shots on the night. At 15:47, Omar
Mullan (who to this point seemed to be trying to set a personal record
for penalties in a single game) was called for high sticking. On the
ensuing powerplay, Brandon Brossoit tied the game with his seventh goal
as Runner (14 on the season).
Topeka
had nine powerplay chances on the night with only the one goal. The
game remained tied through the end of regulation. In overtime, with on
22 seconds remaining, Kevin Patterson took advantage of a two-on-one
breakaway to fire a crisp wrister past Paul Berrafato for the win. The
victory is the RoadRunners seventh straight on the road and helped
maintain their five point cushion over the Texas Tornado for second in
the South Division.
The
RoadRunners return to the ice tonight at 7pm against the Amarillo
Bulls. Fans can catch all of the action at Blind Tiger Brewery and
Restaurant but are advised to get there early as seats are limited. The
team returns to Landon Arena on the weekend of March 22-24.
Friday and Saturday of that series will be Shriners Weekend with the
RoadRunners, which will feature a specialty jersey auction benefitting
the Shriners Hospitals for Children. That Sunday will be Topeka Habitat
for Humanity Night.
