The
Missouri Mavericks (35-25-6) closed out the 2012-13 regular season with
a 5-2 loss to the Wichita Thunder at INTRUST Bank Arena. Missouri will
now set their sights on the Rapid City Rush, their first round opponent
in the Central Hockey League playoffs. The series will start in Rapid
City on Fri., March 29 and return to Independence on April 3, 5 and 6.
Mavericks’
captain and forward Sebastien Thinel earned an assist in the game on
won the CHL’s scoring title with 96 points on 29 goals and 67 assists in
66 games played. Mavericks’ forwards Kellan Tochkin and John-Scott
Dickson each had a goal for Missouri who finished 2-5-3 against the
Thunder this season. Wichita defenseman Kevin Young had a pair of goals
as the Thunder finished just one point shy of the regular season title.
Wichita
took a 3-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game and never looked
back. Young scored at 5:06, Erick Lizon scored at 6:11 and Ian Lowe
scored on the power play at 7:57. Missouri made it 3-1 before the end
of the first period when John-Scott Dickson tipped a shot by Kellan
Tochkin past Wichita goaltender Torrie Jung.
Wichita
made it 4-1 on a goal by Chad Painchaud just 1:43 into the second
period, but Missouri still battled. Tochkin buried a backhand on a
rebound at 9:56 to make it 4-2, but that was as close as the Mavericks
would get.
Young
scored the only goal of the third period on a breakaway as he was left
alone coming out of the penalty box. Final score: Wichita 5 – Missouri
2.
Mavericks’
goaltender Mathieu Corbeil stopped 21 of 26 shots, and Jung made 20
saves on 22 shots in the win. Missouri was 1-for-4 on the power play
and the Thunder finished 1-for-2.
Mavericks’

only playoff games A, B and C of the first round are on sale now.
