The
Topeka RoadRunners are proud to announce a new partnership with Topeka
Habitat for Humanity. Over the course of the remaining season
RoadRunners players will participate in a “Build Day” where they will
assist in the building of a house for a low-income family (Feb.11), sign
autographs at a THFH ReStore location (Mar. 19) and hold a Habitat
Night at Landon Arena during the final game against the Texas Tornado
(Mar. 24). This late season push will build towards a greater role our
players will take in helping Topeka Habitat next season. The RoadRunners
look forward to this exciting new opportunity to give back to our
community and we invite our fans to pitch in and help this worthwhile
cause.
Topeka
Habitat provides six houses per year to low-income families in Topeka.
Three of these houses are built through a partnership with high schools
in our area: Washburn Rural, Shawnee Heights and Seaman. The students
participate in a construction science class and build a house in the
duration of the school year. The finished houses are then relocated to
land acquired by THFH and then purchased by a qualifying family at cost
through an interest-free loan.
Additionally,
the Topeka Habitat for Humanity ReStore (2907 SW Topeka Blvd) accepts
donations of gently used construction materials and home improvement
items. These items are then sold to the public at highly discounted
prices. All proceeds from these sales stay within the local Habitat
affiliate and fund the building of safe and affordable housing for
low-income families in the Topeka area.
