Not
much could sully a night where the RoadRunners (19-6-5) raised money
for the United Way’s Christmas Bureau with the first of two silent
auctions. But the final score came awfully close. Trailing the Bulls
(22-3-3) 2-1 in the third period, the RoadRunners tied the game and
mounted a fierce offensive at the end of regulation only to fall in
overtime 3-2.
Kyle
Sharkey continued his scoring streak of 15 games with his power play
goal at 17:29 in the first, tying the score at one. Amarillo had taken
the early lead on Mike Davis’ netter at 13:04. Davis would put the Bulls
back in front in the second period on a power play of his own (Pastor,
Holding at 4:25).
Sean
Gaffney, assisted by newly-acquired Brandon Brossoit, gave the
RoadRunners fighting chance with time expiring. Sharkey nearly put the
game away with a wrister that flicked wide with 17 seconds remaining,
resulting in Sudden Death Overtime.
With
just a minute and 35 seconds remaining in the extra frame, John Rey
found space between Spencer Viele and the net to seal the victory for
Amarillo.
The
Bulls kept pace with the Tornado who also won their game against the
Odessa Jackalopes. Amarillo leads the South with 47pts, followed by
Texas with 45pts and Topeka with 43. Both teams go back at it tomorrow
night at Landon Arena (7pm).
Fans
are reminded to bring their teddy bears to the game Saturday night for
the RoadRunners annual Teddy Bear Toss. Country Legends will be there to
collect the bears from the ice after the first RoadRunners goal. All of
the bears will be donated to the Topeka Rescue Mission. The RoadRunners
will also be holding their second Christmas ornament silent auction
during the game with all of the proceeds going to the United Way.
