Mavericks Lose Second Straight, 4-1 To Denver

The Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Denver Cutthroats, 4-1, Friday night at Independence Event Center. Troy Schwab led the Cutthroats to the win with three points on two assists and a goal. Luke Fulghum was also a team leader with a pair of goals. Denver goaltender, Kieran Millan, stopped 36 of 37 shots for the win, while Missouri goaltender Mike Clemente saved 21 of 24 shots. Ryan Jardine tallied his eighth goal of the season for Missouri’s only goal of the night.
Denver claimed an early lead, scoring two power play goals, the first by Ben Wilson and the second by Luke Fulghum, both assisted by Schwab. Denver outshot the Mavericks 15-3 in the first period.
In the second period, Jardine snuck a shot behind Denver’s goaltender Kieran Millan on a nice individual effort, but Schwab quickly countered with his third point, and first goal of the game.  He regained the two-goal lead for the Cutthroats and they never looked back.
In the final period, Missouri out shot Denver 20-4, but was unable to convert on any of the attempts. Fulghum scored Denver’s final goal in an empty net, to finalize the scoring at 4-1.  The win secured fourth place alone in the CHL standings for the Cutthroats.
Missouri outshot Denver in the second and third periods 34-10. Both teams had six power play attempts, Denver finishing the night 2-for-6, while the Mavericks were 0-for- 6.
The Mavericks will host the Tulsa Oilers tomorrow night in the team’s annual Pink in the Rink night.
