The
Missouri Mavericks were defeated by the Denver Cutthroats, 4-1, Friday
night at Independence Event Center. Troy Schwab led the Cutthroats to
the win with three points on two assists and a goal. Luke Fulghum was
also a team leader with a pair of goals. Denver goaltender, Kieran
Millan, stopped 36 of 37 shots for the win, while Missouri goaltender
Mike Clemente saved 21 of 24 shots. Ryan Jardine tallied his eighth goal
of the season for Missouri’s only goal of the night.
Denver
claimed an early lead, scoring two power play goals, the first by Ben
Wilson and the second by Luke Fulghum, both assisted by Schwab. Denver
outshot the Mavericks 15-3 in the first period.
In
the second period, Jardine snuck a shot behind Denver’s goaltender
Kieran Millan on a nice individual effort, but Schwab quickly countered
with his third point, and first goal of the game. He regained the
two-goal lead for the Cutthroats and they never looked back.
In
the final period, Missouri out shot Denver 20-4, but was unable to
convert on any of the attempts. Fulghum scored Denver’s final goal in an
empty net, to finalize the scoring at 4-1. The win secured fourth
place alone in the CHL standings for the Cutthroats.
Missouri
outshot Denver in the second and third periods 34-10. Both teams had
six power play attempts, Denver finishing the night 2-for-6, while the
Mavericks were 0-for- 6.
The Mavericks will host the Tulsa Oilers tomorrow night in the team’s annual Pink in the Rink night.
