Fans
of the Missouri Comets have embraced their young team as they have
progressed over the past three years. That passion stems from an ardent
love of the past Comets teams and players. The current franchise will
honor the team’s rich history in this Saturday’s Third Annual Retro Game
against the Rochester Lancers at 7:35 p.m. CT at the Independence
Events Center.
The
Rochester Lancers roster is more talented than their 5-10 record
indicates. Forward Doug Miller is currently tied with the Comets' own
Byron Alvarez as the league’s best scorers, each with 60 points.
Rochester's Mauricio Salles is close behind with 52 points and a
third-place spot on the league's scoring leaderboard. The Lancers hope
goalkeeper Pat Hannigan can turn out a solid performance, as the team
intends to improve its 1-5 road record on the season.
The
Comets will look to defenders Brian Harris and Ryan Junge to continue
their high level of play against Rochester’s high-scoring duo. Together
they are an integral part of a defense that ranks third in the Major
Indoor Soccer League (MISL) for blocks.
Fans
in attendance at Saturday's game will enjoy the Comets retro jerseys,
honoring the 1992-93 NPSL Champion Kansas City Attack. Alumni in
attendance will include former stars like Gino Schiraldi, Kia, and Jim
Schwab who will participate in an exhibition matchup during halftime of
the game. Also making a special appearance will be U.S. Women’s National
team and FC Kansas City defender, Becky Sauerbrunn.
