While
most of the month of December was spent on the road for the Missouri
Comets, they are happy to be playing their third consecutive game at
home on Thursday night at 7:35 p.m. CT as they host the Milwaukee Wave
at the Independence Events Center before heading back on the road to
Wichita on Saturday night also at 7:35 p.m. CT. The team is looking to
improve its current four-game home winning streak and three-game overall
streak with two wins this weekend.
Over
the last two games the Comets have turned up their offensive as well as
their defensive play, outscoring their opponents 41-20 in those two
matches. Keeping this pace will be difficult on Thursday when they face
the league’s hottest team, the Milwaukee Wave. The Wave are currently on
an eight-game winning streak, with their last loss coming to the Comets
on November 11th in an overtime thriller.
Saturday’s
match in Wichita will be the fifth time the Comets and the Wings have
met this season. Missouri currently holds a 3-1 advantage in the quest
for the Turnpike Trophy, sponsored by Independence Tourism and Park
City, Kan. A Comets win would clinch the trophy for the second straight
season. The Wings will rely on their captain, Frederico Moojen, to lead
the team as they try to stifle the Comets offense. Likely without Geison
Moura, who was ejected from last week’s game for striking Comets
forward John Sosa, Wichita will look to Tiguinho and Andrew Hoxie to
pick up the offensive slack.
The
Comets have demonstrated what it means to take full advantage of
playing at home by scoring an impressive 17 points against the Silver
Knights and 24 points against the Wichita Wings in their last two games
at the Independence Events Center. The offense is led by Byron Alvarez,
who has scored four goals in two consecutive games, earning him MISL
Team of the Week honors.
Goalkeeper
Danny Waltman and his defense have also been outstanding. For the
second straight week a defender, this time Brian Harris, was honored in
the MISL Team of the Week. The Comets will have to continue their strong
play on both sides in order to be successful in both matches this
weekend.
