The
Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Baltimore Blast
goalkeeper William Vanzela had been named the league’s Player of the
Week for the third week of the 2012-13 season. Vanzela played a key role
in the Blast’s 15-4 victory against defending MISL Champion the
Milwaukee Wave on Friday night.
Making
his second appearance of the season, Vanzela made 14 saves on 16 shots
for the Blast against the Wave. Half of those came in the second quarter
as the Wave tried to get back on even terms with the Blast, who held a
6-2 lead five minutes into the period.
Vanzela
made four saves in the second half as the Blast held the Wave
scoreless, pulling away to take victory and remain undefeated this
season. Vanzela himself has now conceded only four goals in two games,
making 29 saves, as he and Troy Hernandez have proven more than adequate
replacements for departed MISL legend Sagu in the Baltimore net.
Joining
Vanzela on the MISL Team of the Week is his Blast teammate Mike
Lookingland, who had five points in the Blast’s two victories while
marshalling the defense and recording five blocked shots against the
Wave on Friday night.
The
Missouri Comets also had a pair of players selected following their
17-10 win against the Syracuse Silver Knights on Friday, with midfielder
John Sosa recording assists on the Comets’ first four goals of the
night and Byron Alvarez posting a hat trick to move into the league lead
in points with 20.
The
Wichita Wings’ Tiguinho earned a place on the team after leading his
side to its first win of the season, recording three assists in the
Wings’ 8-6 overtime victory against Syracuse, while Rochester’s Jeremy
Ortiz was selected after his six-point game against the Blast on
Saturday night kept the Lancers in with a chance at victory.
The
2012-13 MISL season continues on Wednesday night as the Chicago Soul
visit the Rochester Lancers at 7 p.m. ET at Blue Cross Arena. The
Thanksgiving weekend action continues on Friday night as the Wichita
Wings host the Baltimore Blast at 8:35 p.m. ET at Hartman Arena, with
the Blast moving on to face the Missouri Comets on Saturday night at
8:35 p.m. ET at the Independence Events Center. Also on Saturday night,
the Syracuse Silver Knights return home to host the Chicago Soul at 7
p.m. ET at the OnCenter.
All of this weekend’s action can be seen on MISLNation.com, with in-game updates available on Twitter (@MISLSoccer) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/MajorIndoorSoccerLeague).
