The
Missouri Comets are 3-0 on this young season, after defeating the
Milwaukee Wave in thrilling style over the weekend and the Wichita Wings
twice in an opening weekend series. With a win on Friday night at 7:35
p.m. against the visiting Syracuse Silver Knights, the Comets can equal
their longest winning streak since the team returned in 2010. Syracuse
comes to town with a 1-2 record, losing to the Baltimore Blast and the
newest MISL franchise, the Chicago Soul. Their lone victory is against
their upstate New York rivals, the Rochester Lancers.
Team
captain and Week 1 MISL Player of the Week, Vahid Assadpour has his
team firing on all cylinders so far this season. The Comets have goals
from 11 different players in their three wins. Their defense has shut
down the high-powered Milwaukee Wave offense and the goal-scoring threat
of Wichita’s Geison. Goalkeeper Danny Waltman continues to shine in the
net, and currently sits second in the MISL with a 0.723 save
percentage.
Over
the offseason, the Syracuse Silver Knights signed CNY midfielder, Nate
Bourdeau and former Norfolk SharX forward, Matt Clare. However, forward
Slavisa Ubiparapovic and defender Nelson Santana are the players this
team is built around. Ubiparapovic was last year’s MISL Rookie of the
Year and Santana currently leads the team with 10 points.
The
last time these two teams faced each other, the Comets set several
records in a 33-12 runaway win at the Independence Events Center. That
was last season though and the Comets know that both teams have changed
for the better.
“We
can’t hang on to what we did last year,” Head Coach Kim Roentved said,
“This team is completely different now, and so are they. We have to
focus on who we are now and what we need to do to accomplish our goals.”
Friday
night’s game is also ‘Blue Out Night’. The team is encouraging all fans
coming to the game to come decked out in their Comets’ Blue as they
cheer on the hometown squad. Doors open at the Independence Events
Center at 6:35 p.m. and kickoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
