Mavericks Dominate Oilers, 5-1

The Missouri Mavericks (34-24-6) dominated the Tulsa Oilers Friday night, 5-1, in the Mavericks’ final regular season home game.  Missouri has now won two straight games and five out of their last six.  Andrew Courtney scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Mavericks and Sebastien Thinel and Ryan Jardine each had two assists.  Missouri goaltender Mike Clemente won his league-leading 25th game of the season by stopping 24 of 25 shots.  Mavericks’ defenseman David Simoes announced his retirement in a ceremony prior to the game.
The Mavericks have just two more games remaining in the regular season as they travel to Allen on Saturday and Wichita on Sunday.
Missouri tallied just one goal in the opening period on Colt King’s 18th of the season.  He was assisted by Kyle Hood and Brandon Smith.  The Mavericks more than doubled the Oilers shots in the period at 15-7.
The Mavericks continued the domination in the second period as they put up 21 shots in the middle frame alone.  Rookie Kenton Miller scored his team-leading 28th goal of the season to give Missouri a 2-0 lead on assists by Thinel and Evan Vossen.  Courtney scored the first of his two goals on a wrist shot from the left circle that beat Oilers’ goaltender Dan Clarke at 8:46 of the period.  Missouri scored their third goal of the period and made it a 4-0 lead on Brandon Smith’s ninth goal of the season.  Through two periods, the Mavericks held a 4-0 lead and a 36-16 edge in shots.
Courtney made it 5-0 early into the third period on a power play goal on assists from Thinel and Jardine.  Tulsa finally beat goaltender Mike Clemente at the 7:59 mark of the third period and ended Clemente’s bid at a shutout.  Ryan Barlock scored the goal for Tulsa which proved to be the final goal of the game.
Missouri finished 1-for-2 on the power play and killed all three of the Oilers advantages.
