The Renegades Pick Up First Win Of The Season, Downing Oklahoma 54-47

The Renegades got off the schneid in a big way Saturday, with a 54-47 win over the Oklahoma Defenders at Kemper Arena. After turnovers had marred them in their first two games (both losses), KC played a clean game Saturday, with just one turnover compared to three for the Defenders.
Protecting the ball was key. The KC offense had moved the ball in their previous games, but couldn’t recover from giveaways.
Last night that wasn’t an issue. Quarterback Dennis Gile threw 7 touchdown passes on his way to a 19-27 day. He had to operate behind a makeshift offensive line.
“[Gile] played outstanding, the offensive line has to get a little better but they hung in there,” coach Ken Matous said. “What’s amazing is that we had a center who isn’t a center play most of the game [nose tackle Brandon Ford], and he played against an All-AFL tenured vet Aaron McConnell. He did a great job and helped us win this football game.”
The score was 40-37 in the middle of a wild fourth quarter. The Defenders were answering every Renegade touchdown with a score of their own. But with two minutes to play, KC scored to go up 47-39. On the Defenders’ next drive, Oklahoma got inside the 20, but QB Rico Watkins’ pass fell into the hands of Renegade Donte Moore.
Gile led KC down the field for another score, putting the Renegades out of Oklahoma’s reach. Oklahoma added one more score, but KC recovered the kickoff, and Gile kneeled the clock dead.
The Renegades, 1-2, face the undefeated Wichita Wild next Saturday at Kemper Arena. Gile says getting the first win helps the team’s confidence going into a tough matchup next week.
“Getting the win lets guys come together instead of pointing fingers. Especially on a team with this much talent, when you lose you point fingers because you don’t understand why you’re losing,” Gile said. “But this win shows that when we come together and play as a team, we can win every game.”

Mavericks Fall Into 2-0 Series Hole

The Missouri Mavericks lost to the Rapid City Rush, 3-1, Saturday night in Game Two of their opening round series at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.  Rapid City now has a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series which shifts to Missouri for Game Three on Wednesday night.  Rush goaltender Tim Boron was stellar in net again stopping 36 of 37 shots.  Missouri scored their lone goal of the game and the series off the stick of Colt King, but Rapid City scored a pair of goals in the third period to take the victory.
“The boys did everything except solve their goalie,” said Mavericks’ Head Coach Scott Hillman.  “We will stay the course.  We will dig deep and we will push this series very deep.”
Missouri pressured the Rapid City zone for a majority of the first period and the Mavericks outshot the Rush 18-12 in the period.  Rapid City scored in the final minute of the period to take a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal by Jared Brown.  He lifted a backhand over the shoulder of Mavericks’ goaltender Mike Clemente and the Rush held a 1-0 lead through the first 20 minutes.
The Mavericks finally broke through and beat goaltender Tim Boron at the 13:47 mark of the second period.  Defenseman Dave Pszenyczny sent a slap shot on goal and Colt King redirected the puck past Boron, but it was the only goal the Mavericks would get past Boron.
Rapid City broke the 1-1 tie on a power play goal by Taggart Desmet at the 11:01 mark of the third period.  It marked the first goal on the man-advantage for either team in the series.  Then Jesse Schultz closed the game out with a goal on a two-on-one with 3:29 to go in regulation.
The fifth-seeded Mavericks will host games three, four and five (if necessary) at Independence Events Center on April 3, 5 and 6.

Mavericks Blanked By Rush in Game One, 3-0

The Missouri Mavericks were shut out by the Rapid City Rush, 3-0, Friday night in Game One of their opening round series in the Central Hockey League (CHL) playoffs.  Rapid City goaltender Tim Boron was stellar in net stopping all 31 shots by the Mavericks.  Forwards Jared Brown and Jesse Schultz each had two assists for the Rush and three different players had goals for Rapid City.  The teams will battle again Saturday night in Rapid City in Game Two of the best-of-seven series.
“It is a seven-game series,” said Mavericks’ Head Coach Scott Hillman.  “We do not panic, but we must heighten the sense of urgency.  We missed an opportunity to win Game One.  It was a very even hockey game, we had our chances and did not bury the puck.  Credit to Rapid City, they capitalized on two big mistakes and found the back of the net.”
Rapid City took a 1-0 lead when Winston Day Chief took a centering pass from Brown and sent the puck into the open net.  Kyle Peto earned the second assist on the play and it proved to be the only goal of the first period.  Missouri had two power play chances compared to one for Rapid City and the Mavericks registered more shots on net at 12-8.
The second period had a lot of action both ways, but it was the Rush who scored a late goal to make it 2-0.  Brown again made a nice pass, this time to Dan Gendur who beat Clemente at 18:28 of the second period.
Missouri battled to get back into the game, but three penalties in the third period hindered the Mavericks progress.  In the end, Scott Wray added an empty net goal to make it 3-0 and give the Rush a Game One victory.
Neither team was able to score on the power play as Missouri finished 0-for-5 and Rapid City was 0-for-4.  Rapid City finished with 32 shots and Missouri had 31.

Topeka RoadRunners Top The Wichita Falls Wildcats 2-1

The push to the Robertson Cup is starting off pretty well for Topeka. In their second-to-last game of the regular season, the RoadRunners jumped to an early two goal lead and hung on for a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats.
Peter Halash drew first blood for the RoadRunners, swatting a puck out of the air and into the Wildcat net at 9:46 of the opening period. A slashing call against Rudy Junda led to a powerplay goal by Tyler Andrew at 13:17, giving the Runners a 2-0 lead.
Goalie Evan Cowley would collect himself and hold the RoadRunners off for the rest of the game. But Spencer Viele was better, stopping all but one of the shots that came his way. That goal came at 17:02 in the third off the blade of Kyle Bauman. The lead was cut in half but not blown as the RoadRunners killed a penalty in the final minute, winning the night 2-1. In the loss, the Wildacts were eliminated from postseason contention as Corpus Christi secured fourth place with a win over Odessa.
The RoadRunners will close their regular season out tomorrow night against the Wichita Falls Wildacts. Fans can catch all the action at Blind Tiger Brewery and Restaurant at 7pm but get there early as seats are limited. Playoff dates have been announced. March 29 Weekend Preview

This is a fairly quiet weekend for Kansas City sports with it being Easter weekend. The Comets season is over, the Mavericks are waiting for the playoffs to start, but the Renegades are home and the Jayhawks are playing in the Sweet Sixteen in Dallas.
Only two movies open this weekend. The first is G.I. Joe: Retaliation. In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson.
The other film is The Host. This is the next epic love story from the creator of the "Twilight Saga," worldwide bestselling author, Stephenie Meyer. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about - Jared (Max Irons), Ian (Jake Abel), her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her Uncle Jeb (William Hurt), proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
Several places will be having Easter festivities this weekend. Legends Outlets Kansas City and Mix93 hosts a family-friendly Easter event from 12-3:00 p.m. with free fun including music from Mix93 DJ Steve Serrano, a petting zoo, bounce houses, games, Easter giveaways, and prizes. This place has great food, cold beer, outstanding staff and best of all they love their Hawks.
The Missouri Mavericks will face the Rapid City Rush in the opening round of the 2013 Central Hockey League (CHL) playoffs. The series will start on Fri., March 29 in Rapid City and will follow a 2-3-2 format. The fifth-seeded Mavericks will host games three, four and five (if necessary) at Independence Events Center on April 3, 5 and 6.

The little guys (and girls) are welcome down to the field to participate in player introductions and get recognition for their team and league at halftime. Jayhawks vs. Shockers? Only In A NCAA Championship

It doesn't look like Kansans will see a University of Kansas vs. Wichita State University basketball game anytime soon, unless both schools make it to the championship game of the NCAA tournament.
The Associated Press reports the Shockers have offered in the past to arrange a series of games with KU, but Kansas hasn't expressed any interest. It doesn't sound like that has changed, despite WSU's recent success in the NCAA tournament. KU Coach Bill Self complimented WSU's success this week, but added, "That doesn't mean we're going to play them."

Mavericks’ forward Kenton Miller broke the Mavericks’ single season record for goals with his 29th and 30th goals of the season.  He also added an assist for a three-point game.  Goaltender Mathieu Corbeil stopped all 36 shots he faced for his second shutout and the Mavericks’ third shutout of the season.  Forward Sebastien Thinel also had two goals and one assist as he improved to a CHL-high 95 points on the season.
Thinel scored the Mavericks’ first two goals, both at even strength, and Miller scored the final two goals, both with the man-advantage.  Thinel’s two goals were scored just 2:28 apart in the opening period.  He redirected a pass from Josh Hepditch at 5:06 to put Missouri up 1-0, and then he beat Allen goaltender Aaron Dell to the short side at 7:34.  At that point, Thinel had tied the Mavericks’ single season record for goals with his 29th of the season.
Miller tied Thinel and the Mavericks’ single season record with his 29th goal on the power play late in the second period. The goal came with just 13 seconds remaining and while the Mavs had a two-man advantage.  Miller scored the record-breaking goal at 8:53 of the third period on an assist from Brandon Smith.  He becomes the first Maverick to have a 30-goal season, and he accomplished the feat in just 52 games played.
Allen outshot the Mavericks in all three periods and 36-22 overall, but Corbeil stopped all 36 shots for Missouri, and Dell was replaced by Steve Silverthorn following the Mavericks’ fourth goal.
The Mavericks close out the regular season in Wichita on Sunday.  If Missouri wins or loses in overtime or a shootout, they will earn the fourth seed and play on Fri., March 29 and Sat., March 30 at home.  If Missouri loses in regulation, they will start the series in Rapid City.  Playoff tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office.  Only playoff games A, B and C of the first round are on sale.

Turnovers Again Plague Renegades In 38-26 Loss In Sioux City

The Renegades game on Friday against Sioux City looked similar to their home opener last Sunday, even down to the score. Kansas City continued to shoot itself in the foot as the team committed four turnovers.
The difference this week was that the offense couldn’t score in the first half and couldn’t hold on to the ball. Early in the second quarter, and trailing 14-7, Kansas City QB Dennis Gile was pressured by Sioux City’s Fred Mitchell. The ball popped loose in the end zone and was recovered by Darius Davis for a 21-7 lead.
The Bandits’ Sean Kelly recovered a fumble on Kansas City’s ensuing possession that Sioux City was unable to convert. Later in the half Sioux City cornerback Rahn Franklin cut in front of wide receiver Carlos Cavanaugh in the end zone to pick off Gile, but his offensive teammates were unable to capitalize on that takeaway as well. The Renegades went into the break trailing 24-10.
Early in the third quarter Kansas City’s Demetrious Walker recorded a safety to cut the deficit to 24-12. Unfortunately the Bandits Drew Prohaska scored on a 1 run and then Jon Smith collected the second Sioux City interception of the game. Damon Mothershead’s 28-yard catch at Kansas City’s 9-yard line was followed by Frederick Bruno’s second touchdown of the game that combined with Max Martin’s kick, increased the advantage to 38-12.
The one bright spot was that the Renegades outscored the Bandits 14-0 in the final quarter. The offense continued to be funneled through Gile. He was 21 of 39 with one touchdown and two interceptions and had 2 carries for 6 yards and two touchdowns.
Kansas City will be home next Saturday as they host the Oklahoma Defenders at Kemper Arena.
