Mavericks Come Back for 4-2 Win Over Cutthroats

The Missouri Mavericks erased a two-goal deficit and scored four unanswered goals in a 4-2 win over the Denver Cutthroats Friday night at Independence Events Center.   Mavs’ forward Ryan Jardine scored the game-winning goal late in regulation and goaltender Mathieu Corbeil stopped 36 of 38 shots in the win.  Mavs’ forward Evan Vossen had a goal in his third straight game and Kellan Tochkin added two helpers as the Mavericks improved to 31-23-6 on the season.  Missouri won their second straight game over Denver and moved within two points of the Rapid City Rush for fourth place in the Central Hockey League.  The Mavericks stay home for a game on Saturday night against the Quad City Mallards.  The first 1,500 fans will receive a seat cushion courtesy of American Family Insurance, and fans will be treated to the magic of J.P. Wilson.  Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster or at the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office.
A.J. Gale scored the opening goal of the game when he backhanded a rebound past Mavericks’ goaltender Mathieu Corbeil.  Brad Smyth and Glenn Cacaro assisted on the play and the Cutthroats held the lead for the remainder of the period.  Missouri outshot Denver 13-12 in the opening 20 minutes.
The Cutthroats took a 2-0 lead at 2:02 of the second period when Troy Schwab tallied his 21st goal of the season.  Gale and Smyth assisted on the play, but Missouri cut the lead in half with just over six seconds remaining in the period.  Forward Evan Vossen snapped home a shot from the slot for his third goal in as many games and 11th of the season to make it a 2-1 game before the final intermission.
Missouri tied the game less than two minutes into the third period on a tic-tac-toe play.  Tochkin came into the zone on the left wing, made a cross-ice pass to Sebastien Thinel who centered the puck to Jesse Perrin and he beat Cutthroats’ goaltender Kieran Millan to tie the game at two.  It marked Perrin’s third goal of the season and first goal since Feb. 22 in Fort Worth.
Ryan Jardine scored a highlight reel goal and beat Millan top shelf with just 2:53 to go in regulation to give the Mavericks a 3-2 lead.  The goal proved to be the game-winning goal and it was on Jardine’s 33rd birthday.  Thinel added an empty net goal to give the Mavericks a hard-fought 4-2 victory.
Denver did not have a power play opportunity in the game and the Mavericks finished 0-for-3 on power play.
