Mavericks Win Fifth Straight, 3-2, Over Quad City

The Missouri Mavericks (11-8-2) won their fifth straight game Saturday night, 3-2, over the Quad City Mallards at Independence Events Center.  John-Scott Dickson and Podge Turnbull each had a goal and an assist and goaltender Mike Clemente stopped 21 of 23 shots for his fifth straight win between the pipes.  Mallards’ forward Mickey Lang had a goal and an assist in the loss.  The Mavericks penalty kill unit was stellar again and killed all six of the Mallards penalties.  Missouri finished with one power play goal on eight chances.
Tempers flared throughout the first period as a total of three fights broke out in the first 20 minutes.  Quad City scored the opening goal when Mickey Lang found the back of the net at the 17:12 mark on assists by Matt Duffy and Jeremy Boyer.  The Mallards held on to the lead through the period although the Mavericks had the edge in shots at 7-6.
Turn bull scored his fourth goal of the season and tied the game at 1-1 at the 3:45 mark of the second when he snuck the puck under the skate of Mallards’ goaltender Jimmy Spratt.  Brandon Smith and Dickson assisted on the goal.  Andrew Courtney gave the Mavericks the lead at the 7:48 mark when he took a pass from Sebastien Thinel and beat Spratt with a wrist shot.  The points for both Courtney and Thinel extended their respective scoring streaks to five games each.
Dickson extended the Mavericks lead to 3-1 in the third period when he scored a power play goal at the 6:37 mark.  The goal turned out to be the game-winning goal as Mike Hellyer scored for Quad City with an extra attacker in the final minute.  The Mavericks and Mallards played a total of four times in the last eight days and Missouri won the last three games.  A total of 90 penalty minutes were issued, 43 on the Mavericks, and 47 on Quad City.
The Mavericks stay home this week and will host a pair of games next weekend on Friday, Dec. 14 and Saturday, Dec. 15 at Independence Events Center.  On Friday, the Mavericks will wear specialty “Give M Hell” jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game, and Saturday is the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Mazuma Credit Union.  Tickets on are sale via Ticketmaster.com, by calling (800) 745-3000 or by heading to the Silverstein Eye Centers Box Office.  Parking is always free at Independence Events Center.
