UMKC Announces Its Fifth Athletic Hall Of Fame Class

UMKC Athletics announced the 2012-13 Hall of Fame class on January 7, 2013. It is the fifth class in Kansas City history, with eight individuals and one team making up the group.

Joining the Hall of Fame this year is Richard Harrison (men's tennis, 2003-07), Dion McNeal (women's track and field, 2000-03), Mary Michalski (women's basketball, 1982-84), Willie White (men's track and field, 1998-2001) and Jason Woods (men's soccer, 2001-03) from the modern era; Willie Jones (men's basketball, 1976-79) from the early era; Brian Agler (women's basketball, 1988-93) in the coaching category; Keith Schreiman in the contributor category; and the 1998-99 men's tennis squad in the team category.

The official induction will take place on Friday, January 25, 2013.

Modern Era

Richard Harrison - Men's Tennis (2003-07)

Three-time First-Team All-Mid-Con selection, he earned the honors in 2005, 2006 and 2007. As a freshman he was a Second-Team All-Mid-Con selection as well. He ranks in the top 15 in school history in career singles wins (27) and career doubles victories (23).

Dion McNeal - Women's Track and Field (2000-03)

McNeal was an NCAA indoor qualifier in the weight throw in 2002 and an outdoor qualifier in the hammer in 2003. She earned the Mid-Con indoor title in the weight throw in 2002. She is also the UMKC indoor record holder in the weight throw (60-5.75) and outdoor record holder in the hammer throw (180-6). She ranks second all-time in the discus (153-7).

Mary Michalski - Women's Basketball (1982-84)

An NAIA All-District 16 first team selection in 1983-84, she also earned Third Team All-America honors that season. She was an NAIA National Tournament All-Tournament team pick in 1983 as well. She also grabbed All-District 16 second team honors in 1982-83, and led the nation (NAIA) in rebounding during the 1983 season.

Willie White - Men's Track and Field (1998-2001)

The Mid-Con indoor champion in the 60-meter hurdles in both 1999 and 2001, he also earned Mid-Con Outdoor Athlete of the Year in 1999. He was the Mid-Con outdoor champion in the 110-meter hurdles three times (1998, 1999 and 2000) and helped win Mid-Con outdoor titles in the 4x400-relay three times (1999, 2000 and 2001). White also won the Mid-Con outdoor crown in the 400-meter hurdles in 2001.

Jason Woods - Men's Soccer (2001-03)

Woods was a First-Team All-Mid-Con selection in both 2001 and 2003 while earning Mid-Con All-Tournament team honors in both 2002 and 2003. During the 2001 NCAA Tournament season, he also earned Third-Team NSCAA All-Midwest Region honors. He also earned Second-Team NSCAA All-Midwest Region accolades in 2003. Woods led team to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths (2001, 2003), which included posting a victory in the 2001 tourney over UW-Milwaukee. The 2001 men's soccer team was inducted into the UMKC Hall of Fame in 2012.

Early Era

Willie Jones - Men's Basketball (1976-79)

Willie Jones, who died June 11, 2005, played for the Kangaroos during the NAIA era. He was a three-time all-NAIA District 16 performer, and was the Kangaroos' second-leading career scorer in that period, recording 1,327 points (15.3 points per game). Jones was also UMKC's career NAIA leader in rebounding with 1,087 (12.5 per game). He was an integral part of UMKC's 1976-77 team that represented District 16 at the 1977 NAIA National Tournament at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo. That season, Jones led the Kangaroos in shooting with 52.3 percentage. He posted a career 56.5 field goal percentage (504-of-892) and a 75.2 mark (319-424) from the free throw line. Jones, originally from Decatur, Alabama, he came to UMKC from Cullman Junior College in Alabama. He was also the leading scorer for a team of NAIA District 16 players that toured Latin America during the summer of 1977.

Coach

Brian Agler - Women's Basketball

Coached women's basketball from 1988-1993, compiling an 85-54 overall record in the Division I era. His 1991-92 team won a Division I record 24 games, including wins over Oklahoma State, Missouri, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Baylor. He went on to be the head coach at Kansas State, has spent several seasons in the WNBA, and is currently the head coach of the Seattle Storm. He led Seattle to the WNBA title in 2010.

Contributor

Keith Schreiman

Schreiman is a long-time supporter of UMKC Athletics. He is a former chair of the Athletic Foundation Board and has been very involved with UMKC in many aspects. He also gives an endowment in he and his wife's name to athletics that funds scholarships for student-athletes.

Team

1998-99 Men's Tennis

The Mid-Con regular season and tournament champions, the 1998-99 men's tennis team recorded the first NCAA Tournament berth in UMKC history, a 4-0 loss to USC in Fresno, California. It boasted the Conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year in Angelo Vasilescu. The team also had three all-league honorees and finished with a 14-5 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play. UMKC didn't lose a singles match in league play, and had a six-match winning streak to open the season and a seven-match stretch late in the year.
