Mavericks Lose After Late Goal, 2-1, to Denver

The Missouri Mavericks suffered a late goal and the Denver Cutthroats skated to a 2-1 win Tuesday night in front of 5,627 fans at Independence Events Center. Forward Luke Fulghum scored with 1:23 remaining in regulation to unlock a 1-1 tie and send the Cutthroats to the victory. Both goaltenders played well as Denver’s Kieran Millan stopped 29 of 30 shots in the win for Denver while Mavericks’ goaltender Mathieu Corbeil stopped 26 of 28 shots.
The teams traded goals in the first period. Denver struck first when Jean-Philipp Chabot took a ricochet off the backboards and banged it past Corbeil. Mario Boilard and Michael Trebish assisted on the goal.
Missouri answered when Trevor Kell wristed a shot past Millan just after a Mavericks power play ended. The goal marked Kell’s seventh of the season and he was assisted by Kellan Tochkin and Jesse Perrin. The teams were each 0-for-1 on the power play in the opening period and Missouri had a 9-7 edge in shots.
Neither team was able to light the lamp in the second period but again the Mavericks held the lead in shots outshooting Denver 13-10 in the period.
Fulghum’s slap shot from the point on the power play unlocked the tie at the 18:23 mark of the third period. He was assisted by Aaron MacKenzie and Ben Wilson, and the Cutthroats moved into fourth place alone with the win.
The Mavs are home for two more games this weekend. Missouri takes on Bloomington on Friday, Feb. 15 and Allen on Saturday Feb. 16.
