Missouri Mavericks To Get New Rival

The Central Hockey League made it official Tuesday, announcing that Denver has been awarded an expansion team. The new team — whose name, colors and logo have yet to be determined — is owned by John Hayes, CEO of Broomfield-based packaging and satellite maker Ball Corp. “My family, my business and my roots are in Colorado and it was personally important for me to locate this franchise in my hometown,” Hayes said in a statement. “These [CHL] teams provide significant help for local economies and this is a unique way to be involved in my community.”The new team will begin play in the CHL’s 2012-13 season in the Denver Coliseum, which has been home to a number of minor-league hockey teams in past decades. The CHL also announced that Brad Lund will serve as the Denver franchise’s president, Brent Cullaton will be assistant general manager and director of hockey operations, and Derek Armstrong will be head coach.
