Two
former UMKC stars have decided to stay home a little longer. The
Missouri Comets announced today the re-signing of Coady Andrews and John
Sosa, pending league approval. Both players are in training camp, which
began today at the KC Soccer Dome, and ready to get the season started
on positive note.
Andrews
enters his second full season with the Comets after being signed midway
through the 2010-2011 campaign. His collegiate career was split between
Mid-America Nazarene University and the University of Missouri-Kansas
City. At MANU he was selected 2nd Team All-Conference and helped the
team to the 2008 Heartland Conference Semi-finals against Oakland
University. After transferring to UMKC he started 15 out of his 16
appearances and scored the game winner in the Summit League Championship
on Nov. 13, 2009.
Last
season with the Comets, Andrews played in 22 games. Although he’s
listed as a defender he often found himself filling in on the top line.
His size and skill made him a perfect target for defenders as they
looked to push the ball upfield. He hopes to improve this season and
become an even more invaluable part of the team, “I will go wherever
coach (Kim Roentved) tells me to go. I want to win and whatever I need
to do to make that happen…that’s my goal.”
Team
President, Brian Budzinski, likes the growth he sees in Andrews, “Coady
made some big strides as the season went on, he gained confidence the
more he played. We expect Coady to continue and grow his game and become
a fixture on the backline with the club for the foreseeable future,”
said Budzinski.
Sosa
was also a star player at UMKC, playing there from 2007-2010. His
honors included 2007 Summit League All-Newcomer, 2007 Second Team
All-Conference, 2008 Summit League All-Tournament Team, 2008 Second Team
All-Conference, 2009 First Team All-Conference, 2010 Jack Gant Award
(UMKC’s best overall student-athlete), 2010 Summit League Offensive
Player of the Year.
With
the Comets last season Sosa was one of only three players to appear in
all 24 games, accumulating 16 points on 4 goals and 8 assists. His
intelligence is unmatched and is a key component to his successes on the
field, according to Budzinski, “John is an extremely technical and
talented player. I think it took John some time to get used to the
physical nature of the MISL. Towards the back end of his rookie season
he really started to figure it out, and we are looking forward to him
becoming one of the better playmakers on the club this year,” said
Budzinski.
