This
week’s lineup of an NBA preseason game and big-name concerts show that
Sprint Center doesn’t need an anchor tenant to thrive, AEG CEO Tim
Leiweke said in an interview with KSHB-TV.
Leiweke,
whose company manages the arena, said area business and government
leaders have come to realize the benefit of having a diverse schedule at
Sprint Center. Having a pro basketball or hockey team at the arena
could bring some benefits, but could block out 40 dates now filled with
shows and concerts.
He
told the station’s Jack Harry that “... I think the business community
and the community as a whole loves the diversity of the 140 events a
year that we’re doing here. We’re making more money than anyone ever
thought we would make. ...”
This
week’s run of events, including Wednesday’s Miami Heat-Washington
Wizards preseason game, Friday’s Justin Bieber concert and shows by the
Red Hot Chili Peppers and Madonna will bring at least a quarter of a
million people to downtown Kansas City.
