The Missouri Mavericks are hosting a new "Insider Dinner Series" that will be held at the IEC every Tuesday in September.
The
new "Mavs Insider Dinner Series" will be a series of dinners at the IEC
with exclusive behind the scenes look into the Mavericks daily life,
business matters, what it takes to be a pro and exclusive opportunity to
interact with players, coaches and management like never before. The
dinner series will be every Tuesday in September (four sessions total).
For each session, dinner served will be served from 6-6:30 p.m. and the program will be from 6:30-8 p.m.
Session 1 - September 4: What they see on the ice
Covers strategy, rules, business of hockey
Session 2 - September 11: Building Team/ Path of the Player/ League
Covers what goes into building a team, rules, scouts, recruiting
Session 3 - September 18: Behind the Scenes

Mavericks Announce Season Slogan And Radio Partner
The
Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League made many business
announcements in front of fans and media at a press conference Tuesday
at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks unveiled the team’s slogan
as "Give M Hell", announced the team’s radio partnership and the home
opener will be on Saturday, November 3. The Mavericks also unveiled a
new jersey design, details about the upcoming Fan Fest on September 8
among other items at the press conference.
GIVE M HELL
The Mavericks call Independence, Missouri home and it is also the home of the 33rd president of the United States Harry S Truman. The team will once again honor his famous phrase with a slightly different spelling of "Give M Hell" as the slogan for the 2012-13 season. The team, along with Justin Park of Park Design, has also created a logo for this year’s theme that features a shield with the "M", a horseshoe and a hockey puck with the text "Give M Hell" under the shield. The Mavericks will use this logo as a secondary brand for the 2012-13 season.
RADIO PARTNERSHIP WITH ENTERCOM AND 1660-AM
The Mavericks have partnered with Entercom Kansas City and all 66 games this season will be aired live on 1660-AM. Mavericks’ play-by-play announcer Bob Rennison will again bring the action to Mavericks’ fans for all 66 games. Mavericks’ games will also be available online and on the team’s mobile application.
“We’re pleased to be partnering with the Missouri Mavericks and happy to be bringing the live action to their passionate fan base all-season long,” said Ryan Maguire, Program Director of 610 Sports Radio, speaking for Entercom Kansas City. “They are a great addition to an already impressive roster of local sports teams we work with on our family of radio stations.”

Jackie Chambers Selected To AFL All-Ironman Team
Rookie
standout for the Kansas City Command, Jackie Chambers earned a spot on
the 2012 Arena Football League All-Ironman Team that was officially
announced by the League earlier today.
Chambers (5-10, 190, Lane College) was a constant threat to score as a kickoff return specialist and despite only playing in 12 games for the Command this season, he finished with a franchise record of 1,163 kick-return yards including two 57-yard kick returns in back to back games against San Jose and Chicago.
Chambers ironman approach to the game was also highlighted on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he reeled in 58 catches for 751 yards and seven scores. His unwillingness to be brought down also heralded 11 rushes for 49 yards and five touchdowns. Along with earning 1,963 all-purpose yards, Chambers also pitched in nine tackles on defense this season. This is Chambers’ first All-Ironman Team selection.

A winner has been selected in the AVITAE ArenaBowl XXV Sweepstakes, the AFL Office announced today.
Sally Dold of Kansas City, Missouri will be heading to New Orleans with her husband for AVITAE ArenaBowl XXV. Dold, a Kansas City Command fan, says this will be her first ArenaBowl.

Plans For GoogleFiber Cause Concerns
Google
Inc.’s partly free Internet service has been lauded for helping to
close the digital divide in Kansas City, but a local broadband advocacy
group is concerned that the coming service actually may widen it.
Kansas City, Kan., volunteer organization Connecting for Good Inc. plans to hit up Google for highly discounted or free installations based on income for its planned 5-megabit-per-second Internet service in KCK and Kansas City, Mo., later this year. The service is the low-end option of Google’s incoming Internet and TV services, which will feature ultra-fast (1-gigabit) Internet speeds.
A Google spokeswoman said the technology giant was open to conversations with the group. She also noted that the basic service averages out to $3.57 a month during seven years and is extremely affordable.
However, Google’s $300 construction fee for the free service must be paid within 12 months. Monthly payments would total $25.
In a Saturday website post, Connecting for Good wrote, “Our fear is that bringing the ‘super Internet’ to our area would further separate the digital ‘haves’ from the ‘have nots.’”
Connecting for Good President Michael Liimatta said the group also is considering a fundraising campaign to help “the poorest of the poor” afford Google’s bottom-tier Internet service.
On Thursday, Google announced it would provide the service free for seven years to residents willing to pay a $300 construction fee. Google’s signature 1-gigabit service will cost $70 a month, or $120 when bundled with Google Fiber TV service. The services will go to “fiberhoods” that express enough interest — in the form of $10 pre-registration by enough residents in the area — during a six-week rally.
As of about 2 p.m. Monday, 34 fiberhoods had met their Google-determined pre-registration goals, most of them on the Missouri side of the state line.
“So far, many poorer urban core neighborhoods are expressing interest in Google fiber at a slower rate than middle- and higher-income neighborhoods,” The Kansas City Star wrote in a Sunday editorial.

The network may not be live yet, but Kansas Citians can check out Google Inc.’s new gigabit service for themselves this weekend.
Google’s “Fiber Space” opens to the public at noon Saturday at 1814 Westport Road.
The space will be open seven days a week, from noon to 8 p.m., for the next six weeks as a way to help residents decide whether they're interested in the network, Google officials said.
A TV with “crystal clear high definition” is on display, along with interactive stations demonstrating the network’s capabilities.
The Fiber Space, which Google recently had refurbished, is part of Google’s “fiberhood” rally. During the rally, residents of Kansas City, Kan., and central Kansas City, Mo., can go online and pre-register for the network. Google says it will light up the 1-gigabit network in neighborhoods that express enough interest.

Topeka RoadRunners Release Regular Season Schedule
The
NAHL released the 2012-13 Schedule on the leagues official website,
with the Topeka RoadRunners beginning their season on September 12, 2012
at the annual NAHL Showcase in Blaine, MN. The opponents for the
Showcase will be announced at a later date. Teams will play a 60-game
schedule as they compete for the leagues championship trophy, the
Robertson Cup.
Topeka will once again compete in the NAHL South Division, now down to six teams with the New Mexico Mustangs being dormant for the season. The RoadRunners will enjoy the earliest home opener in franchise history when they host the Odessa Jackalopes on Monday, September 17 at Landon Arena. Odessa returns two weeks later for a three game set and will not return to Landon Arena during the regular season. The only out-of-division games will be against the Springfield Jr. Blues, who have moved into the 8 team North Division. The RoadRunners and Jr. Blues will square off 8 times, with 4 games in each city.
The rivalries in the South will likely ramp up once again, as the Runners will face Amarillo, Wichita Falls, and Texas a total of 12 times each. The schedule is rounded out with 8 games against Odessa and 4 games against Corpus Christi.
Unlike the 2011-12 season where the RoadRunners were forced to play 18 of their first 20 games on the road, this season’s schedule is considerably more balanced. The longest road swing is 6 games, taking place in February when the ‘Runners traditionally hit the road. On the flip side, Topeka will enjoy two six game homestands.
Topeka will have a bit of a haul to close out the season, with 12 of the last 16 away from Landon Arena, though it immediately follows a stretch where the ‘Runners play 12 of 16 at home. “No schedule is perfect”, said Head Coach / GM Scott Langer. “But overall, every team in the league has certain challenges to face and I think the league did a good job putting it all together.” Langer, who attained his 300th career head coaching win in the 2011-12 season returns in his ninth season with the RoadRunners.

The Movie will begin at approximately 9 p.m. Admission is FREE. Concessions will be available for purchase. You're welcome to bring food and beverages (including alcohol), but glass containers are not permitted.
The KC Roller Warriors are holding their 2012 Rink of Fire Championship at Municipal Auditorium on Saturday. Doors open at 6PM with the first match starting at 7PM. Purchase your tickets here (or any Ticketmaster outlet) or at Municipal Auditorium’s Box Office
The Explorers are also in town with matches both Friday and Saturday night versus the Washington Kastles and the New York Sportimes respectively. Command Drop Final Game Of The Season To Arizona 47-22
The
Kansas City Command (3-15) wrapped up a disappointing season on the
road, losing 47-22 to the Arizona Rattlers (13-5) who were led by
quarterback Nick Davila’s 363 passing yards and seven touchdown
performance Saturday night at US Airways Center. Arizona has already
earned a playoff berth, and need a loss by the Utah Blaze tomorrow to
earn the National Conference Western Division Championship outright.
Kansas City’s defense held the Rattlers scoreless in the first quarter and the Command jumped on the board with a seven yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Gutierrez to Jackie Chambers with 2:26 left in the first quarter. Command DB Rashad Barksdale’s aggressive play kept the Rattlers from finding a rhythm early, breaking up key fourth down passing attempts, giving KC’s offense a few more opportunities in the first half. Barksdale and J.C. Neal both surpassed Ken Fontenette’s single-season franchise record of 110 tackles, set in 2011; ending with 116.5 and 113.5 total tackles respectively.
Chambers gave an Ironman effort and finished the night with nine receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing). His five kickoff returns for 144 yards extended his record of at least 100 kickoff return yards to seven games, and at least 100 all-purpose yards to ten straight.
Rattlers QB Davila threw a touchdown pass to four different Arizona receivers; led by Maurice Purify who hauled in four TD’s and has recorded a touchdown pass in every game this season for Arizona. Davila broke his own single-season franchise record of 4,916 passing yards, set in 2011, and now has 5,500 passing yards heading into the playoffs.
Command defensive end Chris Lyle returned a Davila fumble 49 yards with 56 seconds left in the second quarter put KC up 20-13. Rattlers QB Davila quickly connected with Jason Geathers for a 20-yard touchdown, but the blocked extra point sent KC into halftime with a 20-19 lead. Lyle’s fumble recovery was his fourth of the season; bringing the Command’s League-high fumble recovery total to 18.
A one-sided shootout unfolded in the second half. It only took three plays for Arizona to take a 26-20 lead to jump start the third quarter with a touchdown toss from Davila to Chris Carter, and the rout was on. Kansas City’s offense was held scoreless through the entire second half, and linebacker Tyler Knight’s sack of Davila and subsequent safety kept KC from being completely shutout. Google has been hush-hush about the exact timing and cost of the network, which neighborhoods it will reach and what the company's intentions are with video services, among other details.

Comets Release Preseason Schedule of Events

Missouri Comets will host a full slate of events leading up to the
kickoff of the 2012-2013 season; including Comets Open Tryouts, the MISL
Combine, Fan Fest, the Comets Invitational Combine and the start of
Comets Training Camp.

Former Kansas City Knights owner Clark gets 51-month sentence

former owner of the Kansas City Knights basketball team was sentenced
Monday to 51 months in federal prison for tax evasion and bank fraud.
James Clark, 53, of Overland Park, pleaded guilty in April to keeping more than $500,000 in payroll taxes from employees of his health care consulting firm, SWISH Holding Corp., for his personal use. That included running the Knights, a defunct American Basketball Association franchise.
Clark also used false tax returns to overstate the Knights’ profits on an application for a $1.4 million line of credit from UMB Bank.

Comets Announce Galaxy Girl Tryouts
The
Missouri Comets have announced tryouts for the 2012-2013 Galaxy Girls.
Auditions will consist of three rounds; the finals will be open to the
public on the KC Live! main stage in the Power & Light District on
September 15th from 4 - 6 p.m. Audition information packets are
available at the Comets' website.
The Galaxy Girls have been a tradition with the Comets for many years, and continue to build the relationship between the team and fans on game day, as well as strong connections with the community through public service events. The Galaxy Girls work closely with Blair’s Foster Socks, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing socks to foster and homeless children. Command Drop Final Home Game Of The Season, Fall To Shock 49-48
Command
quarterback Matt Gutierrez threw for 239 yards, four touchdowns and
rushed for another to give Kansas City (3-14) their first lead of the
game with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter. A thrilling finish would
unfold as the Spokane Shock (9-8) etched one final touchdown with 12
seconds left in the game. The subsequent two-point conversion gave the
Shock a one-point lead, 49-48. A missed KC field goal attempt as time
expired gave Spokane the victory in front of 3,764 fans Saturday night
at Sprint Center.
“It’s never just one play, but that was a tough loss,” Command head coach Danton Barto said on the missed field goal to end the game. “I’m proud of these guys. They played their hearts out and battled their butts off tonight.” The Sprint crowd tried to fuel the home team as well. “The one thing I love about KC, we had a great turnout, a lot of kids, a lot of energy, and it was fun,” said Barto.
Though Kansas City didn’t earn a first down until 11:58 in the second quarter, Command QB Gutierrez settled in and connected with Samie Parker for his first touchdown in front the home crowd to keep the Command close, 14-7 at the 11:18 mark. Spokane quarterback Kyle Rowley threw a quick touchdown to Rod Harper to go up 21-7, but on the ensuing kickoff Command special teams weapon Jackie Chambers broke free for a 38 yard kickoff return; giving KC their best starting field position of the game. Command fullback Trey Bryant took advantage of a wide open left side of the field and rushed in for a quick 12 yard touchdown; once again bringing KC within one score, 21-14.
Spokane QB Rowley was in line for another touchdown to Jefferey Solomon when Command DB Sergio Gilliam forced a fumble, and KC QB Gutierrez converted the possession into points connecting with Parker for his second touchdown.
Spokane quarterback Kyle Rowley connected with Adron Tennell for his third touchdown in the first half with just 17 seconds left in the second quarter and headed into the locker room with a halftime lead of 28-21. Rowley finished the game with 320 yards passing and seven touchdowns.
Command defense kept the pressure on Spokane, forcing a Shock turnover at the goal line on the first possession of the third quarter which Kansas City again converted into positive points with fullback Trey Bryant’s second rushing touchdown of the game, bringing his season total to six.

Food Tour Business Set For KC Launch In August
If
you are a fan of Kansas City’s different neighborhoods and the food
selections they offer then you are in luck starting next month.
KC’s Best Food Tours, which launch Aug. 3, will start by offering three different walking tours at a time, rotating through featured neighborhoods such as the Country Club Plaza, Kansas City Power & Light District, River Market, West 39th Street, Westport, Brookside and possibly 17th & Summit streets.
All tours will be three hours long and visit five restaurants.
Co-founder Jessica Burke said she’s working on hiring tour guides, but the tours will launch with herself and her partner, Carl Werner, as guides.
“We’re both passionate about food and especially locally owned restaurants,” she said.
KC Best also will offer a trolley tour of Kansas City barbecue restaurants. Burke said restaurants have been interested, and some have called her about being featured on the tours.
Tours will cost $50.
A separate food tour effort is launching in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District. Rebekah Dykstra will offer walking tours that visit six spots in the district.

Arena Sports KC To Try Covering More Local Events
I have received some news that may be affecting how much arena/indoor sports news will be happening in the summertime. With that in mind I have decided to branch out a bit and report on other events I think the readers might enjoy. Theses events will not always deal with indoor activity and I am thinking about changing the name of this blog (but that is down the road). So if you start seeing articles and stories appearing that do not seem connected to arena sports, that is why.
One thing I will be focusing is food events since I am a fatty who likes to eat. Kansas city is always having food events of one kind or another so this seems like a natural. I also will try to throw in some restaurant and movie reviews from time to time also.

MISL Announces 2012 Combine
The combine will offer 96 players the opportunity to take the field in the view of MISL staff and coaches as they try to earn a coveted spot on an MISL team for the league’s 2012-13 season. The four-day event will be held at the Missouri Comets’ home venue, the Independence Events Center, and their training facility, the KC Soccer Dome.
“The MISL Combine is a fantastic opportunity for the nation’s best talent to get out in front of MISL coaches and earn a place in professional indoor soccer,” MISL Senior Director Chris Economides said. “We are looking forward to a fantastic display of a skill ahead of what looks to be one of the most exciting MISL seasons yet.”
The 96 players will be put through their paces by MISL coaches and USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor. The players will receive detailed instruction, individualized testing and plenty of opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Command Get Ready To Host Spokane On Saturday
This
week, the Spokane Shock (8-7) hit the road to take on the Kansas City
Command (3-13) this Saturday, July 14th at the Sprint Center in Kansas
City, MO with a 7:00pm CDT kickoff.
The first meeting between the Command and Shock took place just over four weeks ago in week 14 of the AFL regular season and ended with a decisive Spokane victory by a final score of 70-46. Kyle Rowley connected with five different receivers for touchdowns, ending the contest with 8 total. While the game remained tied through the first half, a 28-point third quarter widened the gap as Spokane intercepted Command QB Brian Jones twice and forced three fumbles in route to the home win.
Kansas City enters this week 18 matchup ranked last in the Power Rankings and on a three-game losing streak. Injuries and instability at the quarterback position throughout the year has left the Command with the league's worst passing offense (3,511 yards) and 10th ranked rushing offense (286 yards). Despite their inability to produce offensively as they have only averaged 39.7 points per game, they have managed to post the 3rd best total defensive output this season only giving up only 272.9 yards and 52.6 points per game.
Spokane has completed the most difficult and challenging four weeks of their 2012 schedule after playing all three West Division opponents who have clinched their spots in the 2012 playoffs and the East Division Champion Philadelphia Soul. The Shock are currently ranked 7th in passing offense (4,451 yards) and average 59.4 points per game. The achilles heel of Spokane over the past few weeks has been their inability to protect football and their defense which is ranked last in the AFL as they have given up 332.2 yards and 59.2 points per game.
While each team has been eliminated from playoff contention, there is a strong sense of urgency by each team to finish the season on a high note with only two games remaining in the season. This will mark the first year that the Shock will not make the playoffs in their seven years of existence between the af2 and AFL. With the new CBA on the horizon and a major restructure approaching in regard to player contracts going into 2013, these last two games will play pivotal roles in evaluating roster spots and potential long term contract opportunities for players as the season comes to a close.

Kansas City Command will announce a $5,000 donation during Saturday
night’s game at Sprint Center with an on-field check presentation to the
Eddie Kennison Foundation; benefitting the Alliance for Lupus Research.
“Eddie has been a valuable part of the Command family this season,”
said team chairman Chris Likens. “We are happy to join his efforts in
raising awareness by making a donation to Lupus research.”
In addition, one dollar from every ticket sold for Saturday night’s game will be given to the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), a non-profit organization with the mission of finding a cure for lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that strikes 1.4 million Americans – including Shimika Kennison, Eddie’s wife. The Kennison family now partners with the ALR to raise funds for lupus research. Eddie Kennison and Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore are this year’s honorary co-chairs for the Kansas City Area Metro Walk With Us to Cure Lupus on October 27th. Volunteers will also be set up in the concourse of Sprint Center on Saturday before the game with more information regarding the walk in October.

Because of his charitable work, Kennison was nominated in 2006 for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Kennison officially retired from the Kansas City Chiefs after 13 years in the NFL, and is currently the Director of Operations for the Kansas City Command of the Arena Football League.

Kansas Magic Will Add Another Rival To Their Schedule
The
Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) today announced it has granted
approval to the Tulsa Revolution to join the league for the 2013-14
season.
The ownership group is led by Adam Mellor, who founded the Tulsa Revolution, and Shannon Clark.
The Revolution played one season in the American Indoor Soccer League, but when the league ceased operations following the 2007-08 season, Mellor's team was forced to go dark. "We have wanted to bring the team back for some time, but we have a bigger vision and bigger goals now," said Mellor. "We believe the PASL is the right league to accomplish those goals, and we look forward to bringing professional arena soccer back to Tulsa next year."
The Revolution have already agreed to terms with the 8,900 seat Tulsa Convention Center.
"We are excited to welcome Adam, Shannon and the Revolution into the PASL as the first expansion team for the 2013/14 season," said PASL Commissioner Kevin Milliken. "Tulsa sports fans are in for a treat."
